Primary Assessment of Paediatric Trauma Presented by Dr David Hanna
Delivering care to injured children can challenging. Mechanisms of injury often differ compared to the adult trauma population. Physical characteristics and physiology are wide-ranging - from neonates right up to adult-sized adolescents! This results in injury-patterns and examination findings which can be complex. Whether at the roadside or in the emergency department, the primary assessment is the starting point for managing the injured child and it is essential to quickly gather accurate information from the clinical examination.
In this webinar, Dr David Hanna explains the stages of the primary assessment in paediatric trauma, some of the injury patterns commonly seen and how trauma in this age group differs to adults.
David Hanna is a consultant in paediatric emergency medicine at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children and has trained in paediatric major trauma centres in the UK and Australia. David believes that emergency care is a team game and is committed to building strong multi-disciplinary teams both inside and outside the emergency department. In addition to working on the floor in ED, David holds roles within quality improvement and clinical audit in University Hospitals Bristol.
